The Church of the Holy Archangels is the Metropolis of Areopoli, standing in the historic square of 17 March 1821. Built by the Mavromichalis family in the late 17th century, it is a cross-shaped domed church with a ten-sided dome and an impressive five-storey bell tower (added 1836), a landmark visible from across Mani. Its gates carry 1798 stone reliefs of Archangels Michael and Gabriel, Saints George and Theodore on horseback, the Mavromichalis family coat of arms, and a zodiac cycle. Here, before the sacred icon of the Archangels, Petrobey Mavromichalis and the notables of Mani swore their oath before proclaiming the Revolution on 17 March 1821, and the church still holds the only surviving banner from that era, bearing the mottos 'Victory or Death' and 'With your shield or on it'.
