The Old Parthenon, also known as the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, was an unfinished temple on the Athenian Acropolis begun in the early 5th century BC to honor Athena, likely celebrating the Athenian victory at Marathon. Construction was abruptly halted when the Persians sacked Athens in 480 BC, and the half-built structure was deliberately destroyed. Traces of its foundations and unfinished column drums, still visible embedded in the northern wall of the Acropolis, stand as silent testimony to this interrupted ambition.
