The palace of Kato Zakros, on Crete's remote eastern tip, was the fourth-largest Minoan palatial centre and served as a key trading post with Egypt, Cyprus and the Near East. It was destroyed abruptly around 1450 BCE, likely connected to the Thera volcanic eruption, but — unusually — was never looted or reoccupied afterwards, which left valuable finds almost untouched, including bronze ingots, elephant tusks, and rock crystal vessels. In 2025, Zakros was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with five other Minoan palatial centres.
