The palace of Malia, built on Crete's northern coast around 1900 BCE, was one of the major administrative centres of the Minoan civilization and is linked in mythology to Sarpedon, brother of King Minos. It stands out for its large open agora, its hypostyle hall — the largest known example in the Minoan world — and the so-called Kernos, a ceremonial stone offering table pitted with dozens of small cupules. In 2025, Malia was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with five other Minoan palatial centres.
