Monemvasia was founded around 588 CE, when local inhabitants fleeing Avar raids took refuge on the steep rock and built their homes there. The fortified town is divided into an Upper Town (with its acropolis, known as the Goulas) and a Lower Town, densely built with old mansions, coats of arms, and around forty old churches. It passed successively under Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman rule before joining the Greek state, and lent its name to the famous medieval wine Malvasia (Malmsey).
