Perched dramatically on a rocky headland at the southernmost tip of Attica, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion stands as one of ancient Greece's most breathtaking monuments. Built in the 5th century BC in the Doric order, its gleaming marble columns have guided sailors home for over two millennia, serving as both a sacred sanctuary and a landmark visible far out to sea. The site offers sweeping views of the Aegean, and among the columns one can still make out the name of Lord Byron, carved during his visit in the early 19th century.
