The New Fortress of Corfu consists of a Venetian construction on the hill of Agios Markos in the city of Corfu, built in stages. The original construction of the castle was carried out by Venetian engineer Ferrante Vitelli, followed by the present-day structures built by the British. At the top of the fortress there is a stone structure built for defensive purposes and a brick structure that serves as the headquarters of the Naval Station of Corfu. The fortifications by the English and French were constructed to strengthen their defense against Ottoman raids. The fortifications include 700 artillery buildings along the Albanian coast. After the first major Ottoman siege of Corfu (1537) the Venetians decided to significantly reinforce the old Byzantine fortifications of the city.
