In the interior of Naxos, 12 km from the town of Chora, the Pyrgos Bazaiou stands prominently in the plain of Agiassos, a former monastery of the Holy Cross. It is built at the foot of Mount Profitis Ilias near the ruins of an earlier monastery, Kaloritsa, and approximately one kilometer from the village of Sangri in Naxos. Due to its imposing appearance and its location at a strategic point on the road connecting the town of Naxos (Chora) with Chalki in Naxos and the Agiassos beach, the tower is one of the most recognizable post-Byzantine monuments on the island and particularly popular for cultural events, which are hosted on its premises every summer.
